Released in late 2017, Ardbeg Twenty Something is 23 year old single malt from the revered Islay distillery, matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso Sherry casks. The name might suggest that this release is somewhat shy or flippant about its age, but the flavour profile shows off the whisky's maturity brilliantly.
Distillery manager and Committee chairman Mickey Heads, who spent some time at Ardbeg while working at nearby Laphroaig during the 1990s, said: ‘This magnificent whisky was created within the retired iconic still which stands proud outside our distillery today. ‘It’s a glimpse back into Ardbeg’s turbulent past and reaffirms just why the distillery couldn’t be allowed to disappear.’
Dr Bill Lumsden, director of distilling, whisky creation and whisky stocks at Ardbeg, described Ardbeg Twenty Something as ‘bursting with rich, deep flavours’, with ‘an incredibly smoky, silky quality’.

Nose: Real easy opener here, doesn't hide its island roots. Melon, cinnamon and sweet, salty parma ham. Then the sweetness builds with honeycomb and chocolate, and in comes the peat, soft almost caramel and floral.
Palate: Pretty much follows the palate, very balanced between those soft peat notes and moreish sweet, juicy melon and ham flavours.
Finish: Fairly snappy in that it doesn't hang about. Leaves a little sweet peat coating and lingering smoke notes.
